His First Flight – Liam O’Flaherty

The following section covers the NCERT textbook questions for Part I, “His First Flight”, with exam-oriented answers in both English and Hindi. The current NCERT First Flight identifies this as Chapter 3, Part I.

A. Thinking About the Text /

Question 1

English Question:
Why was the young seagull afraid to fly? Are all young birds equally afraid of their first flight? Is a human baby also challenged by its first steps?

Answer – English:
The young seagull was afraid because he thought his wings would not support him and that he would fall into the sea. His brothers and sister had already flown, so he was more timid than them. Similarly, a human baby also finds its first steps difficult because walking independently is a new experience.

Question 2

English Question:
What does the sight of food suggest, and what finally forced the young seagull to fly?

Answer – English:
The sight of food shows how extremely hungry the young seagull had become. He had not eaten since the previous evening. When his mother came near him with a piece of fish but kept it just beyond his reach, his hunger became stronger than his fear. He finally jumped towards the fish and began his first flight.

Question 3

English Question:
Why did the young seagull’s parents call him and encourage him to fly?

Answer – English:
His parents wanted him to become independent and learn to fly like his brothers and sister. They knew that he was physically capable of flying, but fear was preventing him from trying. Therefore, they encouraged, scolded, and finally used a clever method to make him take the first step.

Question 4

English Question:
Have you ever had an experience in which your parents encouraged you to do something that you were afraid to try?

Answer – English:
Yes. Parents often encourage their children to attempt difficult things such as riding a bicycle, swimming, speaking before an audience, or participating in a competition. Their encouragement gives children confidence and helps them overcome hesitation.

Question 5

English Question:
In the case of a bird, flying is natural. In our own experiences, is success always guaranteed, or is it important to try despite the possibility of failure?

Answer – English:
Success is not always guaranteed. A person may fail while learning a new skill, but making an honest attempt is essential. Trying gives us experience, confidence, and an opportunity to improve. The young seagull succeeds only after overcoming his fear and making the attempt.

B. Writing /

Question

English:
Write a short composition about your initial attempts at learning a skill, such as riding a bicycle or learning to swim. Make it interesting and humorous.

Answer – English:

My First Attempt at Learning to Ride a Bicycle

Learning to ride a bicycle was one of my most memorable childhood experiences. At first, I was excited because I thought riding a bicycle would be very easy. However, the moment I sat on it, I realised that balancing was not as simple as it looked.

I held the handle tightly and started moving. Within a few seconds, the bicycle went in one direction while I went in another. I fell several times, but I did not give up. My family encouraged me and helped me practise every day. Gradually, I learned how to balance, pedal, and control the bicycle.

The first time I rode without anyone holding the bicycle, I felt extremely happy and proud. That experience taught me that patience, practice, and courage are necessary to learn a new skill.

C. Speaking Activity /

The textbook also suggests group presentations on topics such as the development of aeroplane models, development of motorcar models, birds and their wingspans, and migratory birds and their flight paths.

3. Birds and Their Wingspan

English: Students can compare different birds according to their wingspan and discuss how wings help birds fly.

4. Migratory Birds – Tracing Their Flights

English: Students can research migratory birds, their breeding and wintering locations, and the long distances they travel.

Examination Point /

The “Thinking About the Text” section for His First Flight contains five questions, followed by speaking and writing activities.  These questions mainly test understanding of fear, hunger, parental encouragement, courage, effort, and the importance of trying despite possible failure.
